Cathedral Palms LogoMost of our guests are gone for the summer for once the temperatures hit in the high 90s they are ready to find some cool weather. We have had one week of over a hundred degrees and that's just too hot too soon. The weather started cooling down again thank goodness, but the real heat will be here soon enough.

Most of you who have come to our park in the last couple of years have met Jimmy. He works in the office, does odd jobs, and has been a lot of help to us. This month I decided to let him add some of his ideas.

Seventy mile a hour winds started the month of April blowing down some of the biggest trees in the park and in the whole valley; then the following week sustained gusts of fifty five miles an hour bringing down even bigger trees, ripping up gas lines, water lines, even disrupting electricity to certain sites and totally disabling our laundry room and back bathrooms. We finally had to have a big tractor come in to remove the stump and now we are back up and running. What a mess we had to clean up. We trade storage space to a landscaper who does all of our tree work for us. Boy, they were lifesavers in this case: they came in and in less than eight hours they had all of the tree cut and the limbs chipped and hauled away. A few days later they came in with a bobcat and pulled the huge stump out and hauled all of the logs to the back which was no small job, We could not have done it without Jack and his crew. We have had it all this April, now we are ready for May.

Cathedral Palms Storm

Cathedral Palms Storm

We have had some of the best entertainment in the world this month with the tenth Coachella Valley Music and Art Festival with headliner Paul McCartney and three full days of music bringing crowds in from around the world. This week we have The Stagecoach Festival which is one of the largest country music concerts in the world, three full days of country music with headliners like Kenny Chesney and Kid Rock. So, if you want some of the best entertainment in the world, Cathedral Palms can't be beat.

With the summer heat now coming in, one of the best places to cool down is Indian Casinos (they also have some of the best entertainment around). Another spot is The Rock Yard at Fantasy Springs Casino (they have some of the best cover bands and in May they will have The Doobie Brothers and The Allman Brothers and in July, Kelly Clarkson).

But, if you are not into that type of scene, we will be having the most colorful spring in years because of the heavy rains earlier this year. So on your way north, stop by and enjoy some 'desert life.'

Hidden Springs LogoHello, again from Hidden Springs. It is with tired hands and heavy hearts that we come to you this month. We have had plenty to do in the park as we are still trying to recover from all the flooding we have endured. Not to complain, however, because at least we can say that no one suffered any serious physical injuries despite the damage we received within the park. For that we are very blessed.

On March 26th the heavy rain started to fall and continued for two more days dumping over 17 inches of rain. We were anticipating the waters to rise, so we began preparing the park as we have become so accustomed to doing. Little did we know our efforts were in vain for as the water rose faster than we could get things moved out of the way. By Sunday, March 29th, the river had crested at 28.85 feet. All work was at a standstill and we could do nothing but wait for it to recede to start assessing the damage. Tuesday morning we were thankful to see the water going down, so we put on our water boots and began the great task at hand. We worked from daylight until past dark trying to get things back in order. Just as we were starting to finish up with the clean up, we were under storm and flood warnings again.

On April 12th, we spent Easter Sunday watching the rain fall once again. Monday morning started round two as we started removing everything we had spent the last two weeks putting back into place. By Tuesday the river had crested at 22.56 feet. As exhausted as we all were, it was back to work trying to recover once again. I want to extend a much deserved "Thank You" to Joyce and Lewis Johnson, Brian Lowery, Cheryl Hilton and Warren Johnson who worked impossibly long hours helping us get our park up and running. There`s no way possible way we could have gotten everything done so quickly without the help of those faithful souls who volunteered their time to wade through the waters and sift through the mud with us.

On a happier note, we are looking forward to our upcoming Memorial Day weekend. We have worked very hard to get the park back into shape so we can enjoy our members and guests with the activities planned for this very busy time. The festivities will begin on May 22nd and last through May 25th. Several activities are scheduled May 23rd to include bike races for the kids, cake walks at the pavilion, bingo, and many more activities for all ages. Also we have planned to have the always hilarious womanless and manless beauty pageants. We will be having a camper judging for the best decorated camper. Saturday night will be our annual Memorial Day dance at the pavilion. This year's band will be SOUTHERN CHAOS, playing a variety of music from southern rock, to country mixed with a little blues. So bring your dancing shoes and get ready for a good time.

As always, Granny's kitchen will be open Saturday and Sunday morning serving up hot homemade biscuits, pancakes, eggs, grits, sausage, bacon, tomato gravy and white gravy for breakfast.

Get in here early to secure your spot. This is our biggest event of the season and we are very excited to have you all with us. Bring your family and grab some friends and come celebrate with us. I assure you, you`ll leave here with a smile. Until then, stay safe and God Bless.

Ponderosa Park LogoWelcome back everyone!!! It was a great opening weekend without rain and in the upper 60's. Finally, it is beginning to look and feel a lot like spring.

Our summer concert kick off is with Gary Lewis and the Playboys on June 6th. We're so excited. Get your tickets early. There is a great line up that day starting off with Kassie Simpson, an 18 year old country-gospel singer that's out of this world. Next up, the Road Dogs, a regional band that plays everything. A lot of you will remember them from our Chicken BBQ early in April. Gary Lewis and the Playboys finished off on the big stage playing a lot of their hits from the 60s. Those of you not familiar with Gary Lewis, yes, he is the son of Jerry Lewis. They were discovered in 1964 and took their first single, "This Diamond Ring" straight to number one. He was the first and only artist during the 60's to have his first seven releases reach Billboard Magazine's top 10 on the Hot 100 chart. He had several appearances on television including 5 appearances within 2 years on the "Ed Sullivan Show."

Finishing off the day will be the Wyatt Davis Band in the Red Garter. Wyatt's group is an up and coming contemporary band that writes most of their own music and is getting a huge following from N.E. Ohio and Western PA.

The country store is now open Mon.-Thur. 9am to 9pm and Fri.- Sun.8am to 11pm. There is a car cruise every Thurs. and a steak fry every 3rd Sat. of the month. The first steak fry was a huge success - everyone commented, "Best steak ever."

On Mother?s Day - brunch from 10am to 2pm so don't you forget your Mom, bring her to the Red Garter for some treats.

The Salvation Army Benefit Cruise is May 17th and rumors have it that we could be expecting 500 to 1000 entries. It's for a great cause, new clothes and toys for needy families at Christmas.

Memorial Day weekend starts off with one of the local favorites, the JYD Band that plays a little bit of everything. Saturday night is Comedy Night in the Red Garter, headed up by one of our members, Russ Hileman. You may remember Russ as the "Tooth Fairy" from last year. This will be one crazy night.

Sunday will be the Family Fun Day with games, prizes, Rags the Clown, and 3 live bands for a full day of fun and excitement. Wyatt Davis, same as above, following June, a very popular regional oldies band and Sector Seven, a local successful classic rock band. What a weekend!!!

Father's Day brings a BBQ and fishing tournament you won't want to miss. Moms got their brunch so Dads get to fish. Of course, there will be prizes.

Don't forget the Members Meeting May 2nd at 2:00PM and don't forget to tell your friends about all the wonderful things that are happening at Ponderosa Park Resort this year.

Donna Beery

Tomorrow's Stars LogoMay is just around the corner and many days still feel like winter. When our current cold front came through on Monday, April 20th, we managed to capture a photo of two rainbows over the park office. (Thus 1st page!)

Ponderosa Park

The walls and doors are up and roofing in progress for our new clubhouse. Weather delayed the progress, but, it is coming along nicely and we are all anxious to have our new gathering room.

Frank and Marvin are power washing the swimming pool.

Our volunteers have been busy with the pool, flower beds, painting, cleaning, mowing, fixing equipment, repairing leaky faucets, and many other tasks. We are very fortunate to have such dedicated, hardworking people.

This month we start off the activities with a 10:30 am membership meeting on May 2nd. Bring your creative ideas to share with fellow members so together we can make our season fun and exciting. That evening our special entertainment is karaoke with Anthony.

On May 9th we will have a collection of Model A Fords on display and the children will be making gifts for Mother's Day. The following weekend the Family Blue Grass Band will be performing and the children can enjoy a scavenger hunt.

On Memorial Day weekend be sure to decorate your camper in your favorite patriotic theme. Prizes will be awarded to the top three places. Judging will take place Saturday evening. Make yourself a boxcar for Tomorrow's Stars' annual boxcar decoration and competition. Decorations will be judged on Saturday afternoon and boxcar racing on Sunday. Ice cream social will be 1pm-2pm on both Saturday and Sunday. The Kickstarters Band will perform.

On May 30th come out and try your hand on our now infamous corn hole tournament and plenty of activities for the children.
