Cathedral Palms LogoThe summer is just about over and may I add not a minute too soon, even though this year has not been as hot as some. The older I get the hotter it seems!

Cathedral Palms

Along with Fall comes a new season for the park and we are so looking forward to seeing all of our members - the park is pretty lonely during the summer months.

It's still a little early and warm for the best entertainment in the desert but we always have the Thursday night street fair in downtown Palm Springs and the great swap meet at College of the Desert - there is something there for everyone.

For a great day trip you may consider going to the little town of Idyllwild - it is only about 45 minutes up into the mountains where it is nice and cool and every Sunday in the center of town there is a place to sit and enjoy some great outdoor cooking. For just $10 you can have ribs, chicken or a nice big juicy hamburger that comes with corn-on-the-cob and coleslaw. To top it all off there is a country band to play all of your favorite hits. What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. You can even make it a little more adventurous and come down the mountain the back way and do some shopping at the Cabazon Outlet Stores right on Interstate 10.

Cathedral Palms

Then of course we have some of entertainment's biggest headliners at our local casinos, five of which are within 20 minutes of the park.

As most of you know we have been doing lots of work to improve Cathedral Palms. There is now a card room next to the office for everyone's enjoyment, the bathrooms have been repainted and the trees and bushes trimmed. We look forward to your next visit to our friendly quiet park.

Hidden Springs LogoHello again from Hidden Springs Resort. Fall is definitely in the air as the high temperatures seem to be cooling down and summer comes to its end. Perfect weather for high school football as the kids all get back to educational business.

We have had a fantastic summer this year as every year here at Hidden Springs and Labor Day was no exception. This is always a fun time for us to have one more weekend with our members and guests to close out the summer fun.

This year's Labor Day weekend festivities kicked off Friday night, September 4th with Family Bingo. Then Saturday was our ever-so-popular schedule of events which included bike races, bingo, crafts, cake walk, breakfast with Granny and our annual Labor Day Dance! DJ Wes Lowman provided another fun-filled night of music and dancing for everyone to enjoy.

Also, looking ahead, we would like to remind everyone of our Halloween Spook Trail next month. We will be having it on Halloween night this year and are looking forward to seeing what comes out of these woods that night. Details and times will be announced in next month's Scoop or as always if you have any questions, please call us at 601-876-4151.

Again we would like to take this opportunity to thank our members and guests for giving us another great summer at Hidden Springs and invite you all back for what's in store for Fall. If you have never been to Hidden Springs Resort, I encourage you to come check out our campground. It could easily become a vacationing favorite!

Ponderosa Park LogoThis year, with the help of many volunteers, Ponderosa has been filled with great entertainment and lots of fun. Kerry Smolira jumped in early and has brought out some of the best local and even national entertainment for both the Garter and the Big Stage.

Ponderosa Park

We've had three benefit concerts on the Big Stage, one featuring the nationally known Beatles tribute band, Abbey Road and we're not done yet! On Sept. 26, Ponderosa Park's Big Stage will host the Ragin' Cajun Blues Fest, an all day festival featuring seven bands and sponsored by NEOBA (North East Ohio Blues Association).

Members and guests have been treated to another innovation at Ponderosa this year, the Comedy Club. Held on Friday nights at the Red Garter, the Comedy Club brings together local comedians, some new, some seasoned, for a night of laughs. Beginning with just a few comedians at the first show, this venture has become so successful that soon we'll have to limit participation.

Those of you who have followed our blog have also seen a new group of young musicians, Magma, a trio of 12-year-old rockers who have wowed the crowd every time they performed here. We were thrilled when, in their last appearance, they debuted their first original song, "Only One Awake". The blog address is www.PonderosaPark.blogspot.com.

Another new talent who has come to the Ponderosa is Kassie Simpson, who celebrated her 18th birthday recently at the Red Garter. This young country singer has adopted us and is a regular performer at Ponderosa Park, not only singing but leading our members and guests in Karaoke each weekend.

Corn Hole is a growing sport at Ponderosa

And, last but not least, the Red Garter now boasts its own, as yet unnamed, house band, made up of Maintenance Supervisor Jim Beery, JT Monroe (also on our maintenance crew) and Kerry Smolira. These guys have brought in some other vocalists, keyboard and guitar players on open mic nights and put on excellent shows.

Labor Day Weekend signaled the traditional end of summer and we were busy then as well, with plenty of entertainment, a huge Corn Hole tournament, three days of breakfast buffets and incredible warm sunny weather; a great end to a great season.

Tomorrow's Stars LogoTomorrow's Stars is still a lush green in August. July was the second coldest July in recorded history and August was not a great deal warmer. We've also had plenty of rain to keep the grass and trees green and the flowers blooming.

Tomorrow's Stars

We now play Pokeno every Thursday evening at 7:30 PM. The game is going over well and attendance goes up every week. All you need is a deck of cards and pennies. It doesn't take much to enjoy an evening.

The biggest draw for children this month was the corn hole tournament. Many children teamed up and competed, most playing for the first time. You couldn't tell by the laughter and chatter that many of them had met for the first time.

The Virginia 6th Regiment came out on August 14 and spent the weekend sleeping under the stars and cooking over an open fire while they reenacted the Civil War. Adults and children were amazed at their authentic clothing and artifacts and spent hours asking questions. The men never tired of explaining what they ate, and the conditions and hardships endured during that time.

Tomorrow's Stars

Anthony entertained us with 50s and 60s music on August 22. Many members and guests attended and danced to the music of their era. Those not dancing sang along and tapped their feet to the beat. I'm not sure when I have seen the adults having more fun. The following weekend Anthony got out his Karaoke equipment and gave all a turn singing along with the music. The children stayed busy with pool games and miniature golf.

For Labor Day Weekend we played Pokeno on Thursday, Bingo Friday and Saturday had track and field games and pool games for the children. That evening we were entertained by Stacy Lilley and the Kickstarters. They played a variety of music and took requests. On Sunday, we had a golf cart rodeo and a corn hole tournament during the day. During the evening we danced to music of the 50s and 60s and enjoyed the fellowship with other campers.

Sept. 12 we are pleased to announce the performance of the Sonship Quartet. They have released albums and have quite a following, so please come and enjoy the show.

Our Halloween weekend will be October 2 and 3. It will be spooky with costumes, trick or treating, a costumed hayride through the woods and perhaps a few surprises. You never know.
